Biofouling and mechanical damage can greatly affect the performance of the hull and propeller, it will deteriorate over time, and poor hull conditions will decrease efficiency. These can also affect the ship's dynamics by increasing drag and the required propulsion. When a ship is dock for a long time, like staying at the port with little activity, then growth of marine biofouling on the hull will accelerate. Hull fouling on the vessels can lead to higher fuel consumption and contribute to air pollution. The frictional resistance due to the buildup of biofilms, sea grass, barnacles, and other marine cretures on the ship hull will increase its fuel consumption. Hull fouling on vessels can also spread foreign species to local ports that can rapidly multiply in waters without predators.

Hull cleaning shall be carried out at least twice a year, while propeller cleaning is recommended to be conducted four times per year. FLED/DiveCenter used various methods to rid vessel hulls of biofouling through cleaning and to routinely monitor the structural integrity of the hull.
